Understanding the Rules of Blackjack

Understanding the Rules
of Blackjack

Blackjack is one or the most popular card games that is played in casinos. The game is simple to play and easily understood. However it can take many years to master the game. The one element of the game that a player should know is the rules of the game. This is really about what a dealer can do in any situation.

When a dealerĺs hand totals 16 or less, the rules require that the hand be hit. If the dealer has 17 or more, they must stand on the hand. Some casinos also rule that a soft 17 must hit. This gives the house a small increase in their edge.

If the dealer does not have a Blackjack and the player does hold an Ace and a ten-value card, the player wins automatically. This hand is also referred to as a Natural. This hand pays extra at 3 to 2. If the bet were $100, the payoff would be $150 profit on the bet.

In handheld Blackjack a player turns over the Blackjack immediately to assure payment.

If the Dealer shows an Ace up when the player has a Blackjack, the player can purchase insurance to protect their natural. Other wise if they do not do this and the dealer has a Blackjack, the hand is a push. If insurance is taken, the bet pays 2 to one if the dealer has a Blackjack. If the dealer does not have the Blackjack, the player wins the original bet and loses the insurance bet.

Unless the deck is rich in face cards, the insurance bet is a bad bet for the player. Card counters would take insurance if the deck was high in big cards.
